YouTube Limelight: Messy Downunder

Each month I will feature one of my favourite YouTube channels, sharing the little things I like about them & of course the video I like best. This month is Messy Downunder. I came across this channel while looking to see what other people got in their December BellaBox as I was quite dissappointed in mine. But Messy got a pretty good box compared to what I ended up with. After watching a few more videos I decided to subscribe.

This is my favourite video because it is something I never would have thought of. I have enough trouble using fake eyelashes as it is, but I think putting them underneath your upper lashes as show in the video is much better. I still haven’t given this a go yet though.

I like Messy’s videos because most are relatives short at under 5 minutes. She uploads a variety of videos from reviews, subscription box unboxing, hauls, swatches to challenges.

Harley’s First Birthday

It was quite a while ago now, but Harley’s first birthday was on January 13. I wanted to celebrate but because it was a Tuesday and I had worked all day I didn’t really have the energy for much. I decided to make some ‘pupcakes’. After trolling for recipes on Pinterest, I found one that I liked but more importantly, had the ingredients for.

Harley's First Birthday

I think it’s safe to say that he enjoyed it very much. We did make him wait for quite a while. Yet he sat there happily posing for photos. I’m glad so glad we trained Harley to sit and stay.

I did modify the recipe a bit, mostly because there are some ingredients I don’t have the patience to measure! The full recipe can be found at Cake Crumbs.

February Bellabox

The February Bellabox theme was ‘Beauty School’ with three different women’s magazines curating a box each that included a copy of the magazine. I was lucky enough to receive an email about selecting which box I wanted. Unlucky for me I forgot which box I elected. As each box contained a different magazine, along with different products, they also all have different on sale dates. I made my selection based on the magazine & the bonus Essie Nail Colour in each box.

I had some drama with the post office too. After receiving the tracking email, I keep checking back to see if there has been any progress. I checked it on Monday night around 9pm & it had been marked as delivered at 5:12pm. Obviously I didn’t have it nor did I have a collection card. I went up to the distribution centre Tuesday morning to find out what was going on. After about 10 minutes of investigation it turns out a new delivery driver had marked the whole van worth of packages as delivered! I was told it was due for delivery later that day. I still didn’t have anything when I got home from work on Tuesday and decided to give them another day to figure it out. Wednesday didn’t provide any results so I went back to the distribution centre Thursday morning where it was waiting for me.

Essie Nail Colour – Hide & Go Chic

I would call this a medium blue, but it also reminds me of denim. They seem to have change both the formula & brush in this nail polish. The brush is now flat, which makes it so much easier to use, although I didn’t notice it at first. The first coat wasn’t very opaque, it looked like I’d used water based paint! The second coat solidified the colour & gave a much better finish than other Essie Nail Colours I have used before.

Indio – Multi V Serum

This is a clear watery gel that doesn’t seem to have a smell. A little bit goes a quite long way & I can see that the small tube will last quite a long time.

Gatineau – Collagene Expert Ultimate Soothing Cream

This smells like rose water & looks like a rose coloured gel. I first tested this at night & was worried my face would stick to my pillow so I only used it on my forehead. It was a bit sticky but it soaked in after a few minutes. I;m excited to see what the results after after a few more uses as it contains collagen & elastin which are great anti-wrinkle ingredients.

Nutrogena – Make-up Remover Cleansing Towlettes

These smell like old ladies to me but at the same time they smell like they would be gentle on your face. I tested one out after a day at the office with a face full of pressed powder, a lick of mascara & a generous coat of bright lip colour. I only needed one towelette to get all of that off & it left me feeling fresh, like I had just washed my face first thing in the morning.

Aveno – Daily Moisturizing Lotion

I’m honestly a little annoyed to see this brand again. I’m sure I’ve had a sample before & now I just feel like its being pushed on to me. It does the job as good as any other body moisturiser.

Kerastase Paris – Nutritive Nectar Thermique

From what I can tell, this is a heat protection agent, although it is hard to tell from the name & packaging. It could also be a conditioning type product. I rarely use heat on my hair, I prefer to let it air dry.

A Change in Coffee Habits

Photo 13-02-2015 7 35 43 am

I have been drinking coffees from the Nescafe Cafe Menu for at least 6 years now. I originally picked them up because I wanted to start drinking coffee (I’m guess because it appears to be an adult thing to do) but didn’t like the instant stuff my parents had. I always loved the smell of coffee but never liked the taste until I tried this brand.

To be honest, when I first started having them I was having 1 sugar in the flavoured ones & 2 sugars in the cappuccino, which is just ridiculous when you think about it. I have also been known to have one every day but in the last year or so I have been limiting myself to 1 or 2 a week, usually when I am out at a client’s office for the day.

They come in a multitude of flavours & usually work out to be around $1 per serve, even when they are not on special. I remember the first time I stocked up on these at the supermarket. I ended up with about 8 boxes, all in different flavours. My favourite flavours are vanilla, caramel & hazelnut.

As much as I love them & like to treat myself, I just don’t think they fit in with my health & fitness goals anymore. We have a pod coffee machine at home, which I use exclusively on weekends & we have a different pod coffee machine at the office so I can still get my fix. There is also a McDonald’s across the road from the office, but let’s face it: I’m not that desperate for coffee.

Unusual Effects of Going to the Gym

Unusual effects of going to the gym

On the 15th of January, I finally joined a gym. I had been considering it for a little while, mostly because I love the idea of running inside away from the elements. I follow the gym on facebook & noticed they were offering a very attractive deal, compared to the other 24/7 gyms in my area. I’m pretty sure all the gyms in my area are now 24/7 anyway.

Back in December I started using a ‘couch to 5k’ app & was making good progress but was finding it hard to get going in the various climates of the Australian (more so Melbournian four seasons in one day) summer.

RELATED: Leg Day Recovery Tips

Here are some non-fitness reasons I joined:

  • I know a few people that are already members so I can go with them sometimes
  • open 24 hours
  • 5-minute drive from my house
  • well equipped with enough equipment
  • friendly & knowledgeable trainers
  • the trainers can even prepare a program based on your goals

On to the unexpected effects, I have experienced so far!

Increased Bowel Movements

For me every 4-5 days was regular (apart from that time I was vegetarian), now it’s every day. Which is totally fine, just something that I noticed. I’m assuming it is from the increased blood flow to the organs.

Getting Sweaty

I first came across this phenomenon when doing a 12-week boot camp in 2012. The fitter I got, the earlier into the workout I started to sweat. It’s happening again now while doing the first leg of the ‘run’ during the couch to 5k. Again, I’m putting this down to increased blood flow to the heart, getting the heart rate up & sending the blood around the body.

Firmer Skin

I noticed the skin on my outer thighs appeared to be firmer within about a week. I feel like it’s not just reduced cellulite, I really think the skin has become softer. Once again, I think it comes down to increased blood flow, particularly while running & leg training.

YouTube Limelight & Review: Lush

Each month I will feature one of my favourite YouTube channels, sharing the little things I like about them & of course the video I like best. This month is Lush Australia but I’m also combining it with a review of a few of their products. I am relatively new to the fantastic world of Lush. I had seen some of their products featured in some of my YouTube Limelight. I was going to the VIP night at Chadstone in November & decided to visit the store to buy some Christmas presents. The staff were so helpful & assisted me to find the perfect gifts. I also got a bit of a crash course on some of their range. I ended up buying a bath bomb, a bath melt, a bubble bar, a gift pack & a scrub that night.

I was intending to give the bath bomb & bubble bar as a Secret Santa gift to colleagues but wanted it to be a secret & then had to go back to buy something for myself so it wouldn’t seem suss. I then visited the Fountain Gate store again to be assisted by an incredibly knowledgeable staff member. She was not just knowledgeable about he products but the company itself as I had asked how Lush has been around for. That day I bought the Golden Wonder bath bomb for myself.

Then when I went back to Chadstone before having High Tea at the Hotel Windsor & purchased the Cupcake face mask.

Healthy Festive Bark

Photo 2-01-2015 4 20 00 pm

I recently tried the peppermint bark at Williams-Sonoma. But this healthy festive bark was a great snack for those hot Australian summer days over Christmas. Made with greek yoghurt, fruit & a hint of dark chocolate it was an invigorating way to cool down. Click here for the full recipe.

January Bellabox

No surprises that the theme for the January Bellabox was “Kick Start” with it being the best time to change old habits & be better all around. I think some of these items fit really well with the theme & am happy to report I like this box an awful lot more than last month.

Tracking email received: Monday January 19
Package received: Thursday January 22 (delivery was attempted on January 21 but I wasn’t home)

BellaBox – makeup pouch

Everyone was set to get one of these this month. It is a bit smaller in person than it seemed in the photos on the website. I haven’t decided what I will use mine for yet, maybe the millions of pens & lip products in my handbag. There are currently about 3 pens and 5 lip products floating around in there!

Photo 22-01-2015 7 47 18 amLaqa & Co – Lip Lube in Beezlebub

Again, this item was guaranteed in all boxes this month. The shade was a bright magenta/pink, not my colour. By chance, it looks better than I suspected! It glides on smooth & is quick to apply. It smells a bit minty, like mild toothpaste, which isn’t a bad thing.

Photo 22-01-2015 7 47 37 amSkinnyMint – 6 Day Teatox

I was very happy to be a recipient of the teatox. I technically haven’t done one before (I’ve only used a detox tea from the supermarket). This sample pack comes with 9 bags, 6 for the morning then 3 for the evening, making it a 6 day teatox. Unfortunately there were no directons on the pack. I had to look them up on the SkinnyMint website. You have one cup each morning & one cup every second evening. I had some side effects as listed on the pack in the afternoon on day two. I think this might be good for me to just do two days at a time, say twice a month or so.

Photo 22-01-2015 7 47 28 amAveda – Botanical Kinetics Purifying Gel Cleanser

This smells like aromatherapy, mostly lavender. You don’t need to use much for it to foam up in your hand before you apply it to your face. I think the best part of this product is that it doesn’t hurt your eyes, so you can get in there & give them a rub to remove the eye makeup without it reducing you to tears.

rsz_photo_22-01-2015_7_47_47_amWen by Chaz Dean – Sweet Almond Mint Cleansing Conditioner

I was amazed by the size of this sample! It is 60mL and I have had put it into its own container as the sachet is a bit awkward now that it’s open. This has a sweet minty smell & will probably last me 5+ washes, although the packet says it will do 2 applications.

Photo 22-01-2015 7 47 10 amDermal Therapy – Heel Balm

I have honestly been meaning to give this a go before posting this, but I just haven’t had the chance. I predict it will work just as good as slathering on a thick layer of rich moisturiser, popping on a pair of socks & sleeping your way to softer feet.

Another Way to Spend Lunch Breaks

Photo 23-01-2015 12 22 12 pmI have recently discovered something new that I can take to work for lunch at the last minute. A microwave cup of rice & a tin of tuna. So far, any combination of rice & tuna flavours have turned out to be fantastic. It will be great to keep a stash of rice cups & tuna in my drawer at work for those days when I run out of time to organise something in the morning.

YouTube Limelight: Niomi Smart

Each month I will feature one of my favourite YouTube channels, sharing the little things I like about them & of course the video I like best. This month is Niomi Smart. I’m honestly not sure how I came across her channel, probably just one of the suggested videos on the side. After watching a few videos I decided it would be of great benefit to me to subscribe to get all updates.

This is my favourite video because it’s pretty in line with how I feel about food & the things that I would like to eat. I find her dedication to eat a plant based diet quite inspiring & has reawakened my inner health nut, which is a help at the start of the new year!
Niomi also has a blog, which I have just been browsing. I have found a few other things there to add to my Pinterest.
